SAOTA Principals invited speakers at DAS Conference 2022, Cape Town

SAOTA Principals, Greg Truen and Mark Bullivant were invited to present at the 2022 Designers Architects and Specifiers (DAS) Conference in Cape Town. Principals presented SAOTA projects that were recently shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2022.
Mark presented on Starlight, SAOTA’s first project in Arizona, located on Camelback Mountain in Paradise Valley. The residential project is inspired by its mountainous desert context and is shortlisted in the Future Projects – House category. Starlight is inspired by its mountainous desert context. The geology of the desert landscape; and the erosion which gives the surroundings its distinctive character become the basis for the sculptural representation of the building.
Buffelsdrift, presented by Greg, is a working farm that includes the restoration of Cape heritage buildings in Ladismith, South Africa. The project is a collaboration between SAOTA and Jaco Booyens Architect, a specialist in clay buildings and is shortlisted in the Completed Building – Old & New category. The client wanted the cluster of heritage buildings to express the qualities they originally had; simple, well-proportioned spaces, a profound connection to place, simple use of materials and a building suited to its climate. In 2019, this project won the gold medal at the seventh edition of the international Domus Restoration and Conservation Award (www.premiorestauro.it) in Italy.
